What is 5-Amino-1MQ?
5-Amino-1MQ (5-amino-1-methylquinolinium) is a small, membrane-permeable molecule that inhibits nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT). NNMT is highly expressed in adipose tissue and liver, where it methylates nicotinamide, a step that diverts it away from the NAD+ salvage pathway.
By blocking NNMT, 5-Amino-1MQ is studied for its effects on intracellular NAD+ levels, adipocyte metabolism and energy expenditure in preclinical models. It is a research tool for the NNMT pathway, and is often considered alongside NAD+ itself.
