Glutathione is a tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine and glycine (γ-L-glutamyl-L-cysteinylglycine) and the most abundant low-molecular-weight thiol in animal cells. In its reduced form (GSH) the cysteine thiol donates electrons to neutralise reactive oxygen species, cycling to oxidised glutathione (GSSG) and back.
The GSH/GSSG ratio is a standard marker of cellular redox state, and glutathione is a cofactor for glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases. That makes it central to research on oxidative stress, detoxification and conjugation chemistry, and cellular protection.

Reduced glutathione (GSH) is the active, electron-donating form of the tripeptide glutathione, used in laboratory research on redox biology and oxidative stress.
GSH is the shorthand for reduced glutathione; GSSG is its oxidised, two-molecule form.
