SS-31, also known as elamipretide, is a synthetic aromatic-cationic tetrapeptide (D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2) from the Szeto-Schiller family. Its alternating charge lets it cross cell membranes and accumulate at the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it binds cardiolipin, a phospholipid that supports the electron transport chain.
By interacting with cardiolipin, SS-31 is studied for its effects on mitochondrial membrane structure, electron transport efficiency and reactive oxygen species. Research spans cardiac and skeletal muscle models, age-related mitochondrial decline and models of mitochondrial disease.
