Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic lactam analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH). Its cyclic structure makes it far more stable than the native hormone, and it acts as a non-selective agonist across several melanocortin receptors, including MC1R in pigment cells and MC4R in the brain.
Through MC1R, MT-2 is studied for stimulating melanin production (melanogenesis) in melanocytes, while its MC3R / MC4R activity makes it a reference compound in research on central melanocortin pathways, appetite and behaviour.

Melanotan II (MT-2) is a cyclic synthetic analog of alpha-MSH used in laboratory research on melanogenesis and melanocortin receptors.
PT-141 was derived from MT-2 but acts mainly on central MC3R / MC4R receptors, with less MC1R activity tied to pigmentation.
